Project Overview
FH® Alloy completed a custom continuous furnace basket project for an Italian customer based on a previously proven large basket design concept for a roller hearth furnace application.

The customer requested a new basket for continuous furnace use and asked us to follow the core structural concept of the earlier custom basket while adapting the design to the new operating conditions and loading requirements. Based on the customer’s specifications, FH® Alloy carried out the project from design evaluation and quotation through to manufacturing and final delivery.

The finished basket was designed with the following main requirements:

  • Dimensions: 1240 × 1000 × 300 mm
  • Required load capacity: 500 kg
  • Maximum operating temperature: 950°C
  • Heat treatment process: Isothermal annealing

The final 3D design drawings, completed using FH® Alloy, were based on reference materials provided by the client illustrating daily operating conditions.

Customer Requirement
The Italian customer needed a basket suitable for continuous furnace production and requested that the new design be developed according to the engineering concept of a previously customized large basket used in a roller hearth furnace project.

The main target was not only to reproduce a similar appearance, but to apply the earlier design philosophy to a new basket with different dimensions and process conditions.

The customer’s key requirements included:

  • A usable basket size of 1240 × 1000 × 300 mm
  • A structure capable of supporting a total load of 500 kg
  • Reliable service at a maximum temperature of 950°C
  • Suitability for isothermal annealing
  • Practical structural design for continuous furnace operation
  • Completion of design, quotation, production and delivery by FH® Alloy

Operating Conditions and Application Background
According to the process information provided by the customer, this basket would be used in a continuous furnace for isothermal annealing.

The operating data showed that the customer’s daily production environment involved different baskets and trays under several heat treatment conditions. For the 1240 × 1000 mm basket application, the relevant process condition was isothermal annealing, with a typical operating temperature range around 900–930°C. Based on the customer’s requirement, FH® Alloy designed the basket for a maximum temperature of 950°C to provide a suitable engineering margin.

This application required the basket to combine:

  • good high-temperature structural stability,
  • sufficient load-bearing capacity,
  • reliable performance in repeated furnace cycles,
  • and practical compatibility with the customer’s continuous production line.

Design Concept Based on a Previous Italian Project
One important feature of this project is that the basket was not designed from zero without reference. The customer specifically asked FH® Alloy to follow the design concept of a previously customized large basket for an Italian roller hearth furnace application.

This means the new basket inherited the proven ideas of the earlier design, such as:

  • rational load-bearing layout,
  • reinforced base support logic,
  • practical side wall structure,
  • a balance between strength and self-weight,
  • and a structure suitable for industrial high-temperature use.

FH® Alloy then adapted this concept to the new project requirements, especially for:

  • different external dimensions,
  • different basket height,
  • different process conditions,
  • and the required 500 kg loading capacity.

This approach helped shorten the design evaluation cycle while also improving confidence in the structural concept.

Engineering Challenge
Although the project seems straightforward from the dimension data, the actual engineering challenge was more complex.

The basket had to be designed for a relatively large footprint of 1240 × 1000 mm, while maintaining structural integrity under a 500 kg load at high temperature. At elevated temperatures, basket structures must withstand not only the static weight of parts, but also the effects of thermal exposure and repeated heating cycles.

The main engineering considerations included:
1. High-Temperature Strength
The basket had to operate at temperatures up to 950°C, so the design needed to ensure adequate structural rigidity and stability under high-temperature conditions.
2. Load Distribution
With a required load capacity of 500 kg, the basket needed a well-distributed supporting structure to reduce localized stress concentration and improve overall load-bearing performance.
3. Structural Stability
Because of the relatively large basket size, the base and side structures needed to be designed to reduce distortion risk during repeated use in the furnace.
4. Compatibility with Continuous Furnace Operation
The basket needed to fit the practical operating conditions of a continuous furnace, including loading, transport, heating and unloading.

FH® Alloy’s Design Solution
Based on the customer’s requirements and the earlier Italian basket concept, FH® Alloy developed the final structure shown in the 3D design drawing.

The completed design includes a reinforced structural layout consisting of:

  • a stable load-bearing base,
  • surrounding side walls for structural containment,
  • an optimized internal support pattern,
  • and a practical configuration for continuous furnace use.

Reinforced Base Structure
The basket base was designed as the primary load-bearing area. Because the basket needed to support up to 500 kg, the base structure was a key part of the design. FH® Alloy used a reinforced layout to improve overall strength and support distribution.
Optimized Side Panel Structure
The side walls were designed not simply as enclosure panels, but as part of the structural system. This helps improve basket rigidity and contributes to stability during loading and handling.
Internal Supporting Geometry
The internal structure was arranged to provide effective support while helping control the balance between basket weight and load capacity. A rational internal geometry is particularly important for large-size furnace baskets.

Design for Manufacturing
In addition to structural performance, FH® Alloy also considered manufacturing feasibility during the design stage, ensuring that the basket could be produced efficiently and consistently according to the final drawing.

From Design Request to Final Delivery
This project covered more than drawing preparation. FH® Alloy supported the customer through the full process from technical communication to finished delivery.

The workflow included:
Customer Requirement
→ Reference Concept Review
→ Operating Condition Analysis
→ Basket Design
→ Quotation
→ Manufacturing
→ Quality Inspection
→ Delivery

1. Technical Review
FH® Alloy reviewed the customer’s target dimensions, process type, load requirement and maximum temperature.
2. Design Development
Based on the previously customized Italian large basket concept, our engineering team developed the new 1240 × 1000 × 300 mm basket design.
3. Quotation
After confirming the design concept and production scope, FH® Alloy provided a quotation for the basket project
4. Manufacturing
The basket was then produced according to the approved design and technical requirements.
5. Final Delivery
After manufacturing and inspection, the completed baskets were delivered to the customer.
