🔥 About 2.4879 / G-NiCr28W Alloy
EN 2.4879, also designated G-NiCr28W, is a chromium-tungsten-silicon alloyed nickel-based casting material developed for high-temperature service.
2.4879 as suitable for heat-loaded transport components in annealing, hardening and continuous furnaces, including rolls, grids, baskets, support beams and related furnace hardware. The material is reported as resistant to oxidizing gases and capable of use in air at temperatures up to approximately 1150°C, depending on the actual component design and operating conditions.
Typical nominal alloying elements include nickel, chromium, tungsten, silicon and carbon. The nickel-chromium matrix supports elevated-temperature stability, while tungsten contributes to high-temperature load-bearing and creep performance.
Important operating note
The published maximum material temperature is not automatically the guaranteed operating temperature of a finished furnace roll. Actual allowable service conditions depend on:
The material is not recommended for reducing atmospheres containing H₂S
⭐ Key Features of FH® Alloy 2.4879 Furnace Rolls
High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance
The chromium-containing nickel-based alloy is designed for operation in oxidizing high-temperature environments.
This helps reduce excessive oxidation and surface degradation during continuous furnace service.
High-Temperature Load-Bearing Capability
Furnace rolls must maintain structural stability while supporting products at elevated temperatures.
The G-NiCr28W alloy is used for highly loaded furnace transport components where resistance to static and dynamic stress is required.
Resistance to Long-Term Thermal Exposure
Continuous furnace rolls can remain at elevated temperatures for extended periods.
The material’s high-temperature and creep-related properties make it suitable for components exposed to prolonged thermal loading, subject to correct engineering design.
Custom Roll Geometry
FH® Alloy can manufacture furnace rolls according to customer drawings, including customization of:
Precision-Machined Journals
The roll journals can be finish-machined according to the required bearing, coupling or drive arrangement.
Important characteristics such as concentricity, straightness, journal dimensions and surface finish can be controlled according to the approved drawing.
🏭 Typical Applications
FH® Alloy 2.4879 furnace rolls can be engineered for applications such as:
Continuous Annealing Furnaces
Used to support and transport metal products through controlled heating and soaking zones.
Roller Hearth Furnaces
Suitable for continuous or batch transportation of plates, components and other heat-treated products.
Hardening and Tempering Furnaces
Designed for furnace systems involving repeated high-temperature operation and mechanical loading.
Industrial Heat Treatment Lines
Used in metallurgical, steel-processing, machinery, automotive and special-alloy production facilities.
Continuous Processing Furnaces
Applicable to production lines requiring long rolls, stable rotation and consistent material movement.
🧩 Furnace Roll Design Considerations
A reliable furnace roll cannot be selected by material grade alone. The following engineering factors should be reviewed before production.
Operating Temperature
Provide both:
This helps determine whether 2.4879 is suitable for the expected loading and service life.
Furnace Atmosphere
The customer should specify whether the furnace uses:
Atmosphere composition can significantly affect alloy performance.
Mechanical Load
Required information includes:
Rotation Conditions
Please specify:
Installation Structure
Bearing positions, shaft dimensions, sealing arrangements and thermal expansion allowances should be clearly defined on the drawing.
🛠️ Manufacturing and Quality Control
FH® Alloy can arrange the production and inspection process according to the technical requirements of each furnace-roll project.
Material Verification
Material documentation and chemical-composition verification can be supplied according to the purchase specification.
Dimensional Inspection
Inspection may cover:
Non-Destructive Testing
Depending on the product structure and customer requirements, inspection options may include:
Rotation and Balance Inspection
Runout, concentricity and dynamic balancing can be evaluated where required by the operating speed and furnace design.
Documentation
Available project documents may include:
All inspection requirements should be confirmed before production.
