Quenching furnace heat treatment fixtures are the "tangible hand" of the heat treatment process, translating abstract process parameters (temperature, time, cooling rate) into precise control over the workpiece's physical form and microstructure. An excellent quenching fixture design is the product of deep integration of materials science, mechanical design, and heat treatment process knowledge, serving as the key guarantee for achieving high-quality, consistent, low-distortion quenching production.


Quenching furnace heat treatment fixtures must not only withstand high temperatures like other heat treatment fixtures but also possess high hot strength, excellent thermal fatigue resistance, and sufficient toughness to endure the severe thermal shock and potential corrosion from quenchants (oil, water, polymer solutions, or salt baths).

1. Precise Positioning & Securing: Ensures the workpiece does not shift during transfer and quenching, preventing uneven cooling due to movement.

2. Active Distortion Control: This is its most critical function. It resists workpiece warping during high-temperature softening and quenching contraction through support, constraint, or pre-stress application.

3. Guiding the Quenching Process:

  • Controlling Immersion Method: Entering the quenchant at a specific angle and speed to reduce vapor film and ensure uniform cooling.
  • Enabling Directional Cooling: Designing for differential cooling rates on required areas (e.g., adding insulation or flow guides).

4. Withstanding Extreme Thermal Shock: Materials endure massive thermal stress when moving from ~800-1000°C into a liquid at tens of degrees within seconds.

5. Resisting Medium Corrosion/Erosion: Quench oils, brines, polymers, etc., have varying corrosive/oxidative effects on metals.


Main Types & Typical Examples:

1. Universal Load-Bearing Type:

  • Trays/Baskets: For batch quenching of small, regular parts (e.g., fasteners, bearing rollers). The bottom must have sufficient gaps for quenchant flow.
  • Hangers/Poking Rods: For hanging shaft or sleeve-type parts, ensuring vertical immersion to reduce bending.

2. Dedicated Anti-Distortion Fixtures (Core Category):

  • Gear Press Quenching Dies: The most classic example. The heated gear is placed between a tapered mandrel and a press die for quenching under a press, effectively controlling gear tooth distortion and flatness.
  • Bearing Ring/Annular Part Expansion Clamps: Expand from the inside against the outer wall or clamp from the outside against the inner hole to prevent out-of-roundness.
  • Long Shaft Support Racks: Feature multiple V-shaped rollers or support blocks, allowing the shaft to contract freely during quenching while maintaining straightness.
  • Plate Part Flattening Frames: Use top plates or frame structures to restrict warping of thin plates during quenching.

3. Induction Hardening Specific Fixtures:

  • Integrated with induction coils for localized hardening. Precisely positions the area to be hardened and guides spray coolant.

4. Vacuum/Atmosphere Quenching Fixtures:

  • Possess high strength and low volatility at high temperatures (to avoid contaminating the furnace and workpiece). Often made from graphite, molybdenum, tungsten, or special heat-resistant alloys.


Key Design Considerations:

1. Material Selection (Top Priority):

  • Heat-Resistant Steel: E.g., AISI 314, 330, 253MA, suitable for most neutral or slightly oxidizing quenching atmospheres, cost-effective.
  • High-Temperature Alloys: E.g., Inconel 600/601, Haynes 230, for higher temperatures, harsher corrosive environments, or vacuum furnaces.
  • Specialty Materials: Graphite (for high-temperature vacuum quenching, low thermal mass, but impact-sensitive); Silicon Carbide Ceramics (extreme temperatures, wear-resistant, but brittle).
  • Considerations: High-temperature yield strength, thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion (ideally close to the workpiece), thermal shock resistance, resistance to medium corrosion.

2. Structural Mechanics Design:

  • Avoid Stress Concentrations: Use fillets and reduce sharp corners.
  • Symmetry & Uniformity: Ensures even heat distribution and cooling.
  • Balance Lightweighting with Strength/Toughness: Reinforce key load-bearing areas, reduce weight in non-critical areas to lower thermal mass and energy consumption.

3. Cooling Flow Path Design:

  • The fixture structure must allow quenchant to flow freely and rapidly, without creating dead zones that could lead to insufficient local cooling (soft spots) on the workpiece.
    Sometimes requires designing flow guides or openings to direct liquid to critical areas.
